2009 Black Alumni Reunion
November 6-8

2009 BAR ChairGreetings from Chapel Hill!

It is with great anticipation that I greet you as chair of the 2009 Black Alumni Reunion. This year’s reunion is particularly exciting and bittersweet for me because it’s my 20th anniversary. Happy anniversary to the class of 1989 and all other alumni celebrating milestone class years.

Once again we are planning to “celebrate who we are” in true Tar Heel fashion. Whether you are a Black Pioneer or a recent graduate, BAR always serves as a good time to create new memories at Carolina. The committee would like to encourage all of you to make plans to return to Chapel Hill for Homecoming/RAMpage 2009. We have the rare opportunity to reunite with old friends and classmates, enjoy beautiful Chapel Hill and beat those Duke Blue Devils – all in the same weekend.

We are in an era of change and hope. Since the last time we met for BAR, we have witnessed the inauguration of our first African-American president as well as some unbelievable economic events. By taking advantage of everything BAR has to offer, you can encourage growth and cultivate our future at Carolina while having a good time reconnecting with old friends.

As in the past, BAR will provide alumni and friends the opportunity to:

  • Encourage and network with current students – Partner Lunch
  • Support academic scholarships and honor outstanding alumni – Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Banquet
  • Meet and hear from alumni who created the legacy for our black alumni – Black Pioneers Dinner
  • Network and socialize with old friends and classmates – tailgate party, alumni dance
  • Relax outdoors and enjoy the beauty of the area – Golf Tournament, football game
  • Be uplifted and encouraged spiritually – Inspirational Service

And, as always, you can ease the economic strain and “party with a purpose” at a discount – join the GAA today and receive discounted ticket prices for BAR events.

I’d like to thank our corporate sponsors for their support and all of the alumni and friends who have purchased ads in the souvenir journal or donated to the LOTH scholarship in the past. Your continued support of BAR and the GAA has been fantastic and is much appreciated.

Whether you return to campus often or haven’t been back in a while, I encourage you to put BAR on your “to do” list. For my fellow Tar Heels who are regular BAR participants, I thank you and encourage you to connect with someone who has never been to BAR or hasn’t been back in a while, and personally invite them.

It’s time to get on e-mail or Facebook and reconnect with your Carolina crew from back in the day. Contact that BSM sub-group member, frat brother or soror, suitemate or Bridge buddy and put November 6-8 on the calendar. I hope to see you, your family and classmates for Homecoming/RAMpage 2009.

Go Heels!
