Fred Stutzman '00, doctoral candidate in the School of Information and Library Science, has been studying online social networks like Facebook and MySpace for the past four years. During his talk, Stutzman will discuss why these sites are so popular, how people young and old use social networking sites and how the use of these sites has changed over the years. He'll also discuss the privacy implications of social networking and how social networking users can best protect their privacy and enjoy these sites.

Lecturer: Fred Stutzman is a doctoral candidate in the UNC's School of Information and Library Science. His dissertation explores how transitional populations leverage social technologies for social support. Fred's work is supported by a teaching fellowship at UNC. In addition to his graduate work, Fred is the co-founder of ClaimID.com, a project that empowers individuals to manage their online identity.
