Rameses Succumbs; Successor Tapped

Rameses XVIII, the blue-horned dorset ram who roamed the Kenan Stadium sidelines for four seasons, has died.

Caretaker Ann Leonard ’82 (MSPH) said the ram, who had gone by the name Pablo before he attained stardom as the Carolina mascot, died of natural causes on Feb. 9. He was about 8 years old.

And his successor is ready to go. Rameses XIX, known as Bam Bam for his rambunctious nature, is 2 years old and will wear the light blue next fall.

Chris Hogan, a cousin of Leonard’s late husband, Rob Hogan, will be Rameses XIX’s primary caretaker. Rob was the third generation of Hogans who have tended the Carolina rams since the mascot was adopted in the 1920s.
