A special thank you from Class President Wade Smith after the 50th Reunion:
Dear Classmates:
I won’t forget the gathering on the lawn at the Carolina Inn which preceded our banquet. Never in this lifetime. We looked into beautiful faces we had not seen in half a century. These faces at first were blurred because of the passage of time, but then, as a slide coming into focus, we saw clearly a beloved friend of long ago. And suddenly we realized that no grass had grown in the path between us. It was as though only a few minutes had passed. We took dozens of photographs and we embraced with teary eyes. It was a moment of the heart. We were eating the grapes from the top of the vineyard.
And then we gathered for a magical banquet. We loved the remarks by Charlie Gray, our student body president. And we were marvelously entertained by Freddie Kiger as we learned new secrets about the campus we love.
For many of us, the graduation ceremony was the lovely frosting on the cake. We walked two by two and waved at thousands and thousands of cheering students and parents and we placed our images into the great graduation moments at Chapel Hill.
The day ended and our reunion ended and Ann and I returned to our house on Wilson Lane in Raleigh, stunned at the wonder of it all and unable really to think of what it all meant. We worked hard to be well organized on behalf of our class. Many people were involved in the planning. Thanks to all of them. And thanks so much to the Alumni Association and Linda Rainey and Doug Dibbert who magically appeared each time we needed them.
We learned during our reunion that nearly one third of us have gone away. This made our moments together all the more dear. And now we are left to remember it all. Our class has conducted ten reunions. A few of our class mates have attended every one of them. We know that there will be no more reunions. They are gone. But, we can return in five years and have a dinner and be together again. We know now, for sure, that we must do this. And we can return every year to the Old Students Luncheon. And we know now, for sure, that we must make it back for these events.
Finally, let me thank you for making me your permanent class president 50 years ago. It has been a wonderful honor which I will always cherish. Let us pledge that we are not going to let grass grow in the path between us. Not ever!
Wade
