Does anyone have the recipe for Carolina Country BBQ Sauce? Or know someone that may be selling it? The Original facility closed this year in Gastonia, NC. It was the Very Best!

Please Email any information.

Sadly, Josh Bullucks and Bob Meltons are gone. This leaves Parkers in Wilson NC as the best man standing. I was a waiter for Josh Bulluck as a teenager. I lived just a block away. There has never been anyone to make Brunswick Stew like he made!!!! We stop in Wilson every August to grab a load of BBQ,slaw, potatoes and hush puppies on the way to White Lake for a weeks vacation.

I don't know if this site still exists as I see the last message was from last year. I live in Bertrange, Luxembourg and get a sort--of-BBQ fix at Maybe Not Bob's in the Grund, but frankly BBQ'd chicken and ribs are no sub for eastern nc barbecue. Does anyone know of a place within a day's drive of Lux where one can find anything close to the Holy Grub?

If any of my fellow BBQ loving Tar Heels find themselves in Colorado Springs, CO in the summer, they are cordially invited to my home for some real, home-smoked eastern NC Q.

I've built a couple of smokers and host frequent parties throughout the spring/summer.

We also do a big event (150-200 people) each summer (in 2008 the date is July 19) with lots of pig, coleslaw, sweet tea, beans and greens, banana puddin', etc. Throw in a bluegrass band and it makes for the perfect summer day.

Let me know if your're interested in joining us (about 1/3 of the attendees are local Tar Heels).

My favorite Carolina Barbecue is a little hole in the wall in Norlina, NC called "Clem's". The pulled pork is a unique taste that I can't find anywhere else. Throw in stewed tomatoes and mac&cheese with a piece of cornbread and you have small town Carolina eatin' at its best!

Hey folks,

A couple of updates to the dialogue:

Simp's outside of Creswell closed a few years back after the death of one of the owners.

Bill's in Wilson now has a buffet with a pig on it as well as chopped BBQ, chicken and pastry, chicken etc.--nice to be able to pull the parts that you like from the cooked pig and season them to taste-they have a vinegar sauce and a neat heated brown BBQ sauce, too by the pig station on the buffet.

Parker's and Wilbur's are overrated IMHO--based on last visits there and compared to Bill's and especially Mitchell's.

If you hear that Mitchell's has reopened on 301 South in Wilson you owe it to yourself to stop in and try the ribs and BBQ-you will look at Bill's, Parker's, and the other places differently from there on out-man that guy has it going with cooking a pig!

Just my $.02,

Will

I'm a fellow Eastern NC BBQ junkie and while doing some research stumbled upon H Kent Craig's review of various BBQ joints. I'm fortunate enough to still live in the area, but I noticed many of you have been looking for ways to have authentic Q shipped to you. I've never had it before, but according to H Kent Craig it's pretty good (4 pigs) and will ship anywhere in the country. Someone try it and give a review- I'm interested to hear other opinions!

Ya'll don't know Barbeque if you have not had it at one of the Bridges places in Shelby. Of course, I'm biased because I grew up here and ate a lot of BBQ. While at Carolina I had to eat Eastern NC BBQ, and it just doesn't measure up. And what is the reason for Brunswick Stew with BBQ?

Give WNC BBQ a try---it's the real thing!

For the most part, eastern North Carolina has it right. I know, I'm not biased at all being from the area. As far as the Outer Banks, we don't have much to offer, we're too worried about pleasing Yankee visitors.
In Currituck County there's Saul's, which doesn't have family style anymore, but still great BBQ and hushpuppies. Outside of Edenton there's Nixon's, which is in Rocky Hock. They're really known for herring being on a river, but the barbecue is also excellent.
Most know about Parker's in Greenville and Wilson, as well as Gardner's in Rocky Mount. Wilbur's gets the credit in Goldsboro, but there's another place there (can't remember the name) that's just as good.
After all of that, however, near the top for me would be Bullock's in Durham. Friendly waitresses and great family style BBQ, made me feel like I was back in eastern NC again. It's probably one of my fondest memories of being at UNC.

I'm not too surprised that I went from a NC sports board to a BBQ board to a UNC alum BBQ board. What a great way to waste a rainy Sunday afternoon! I miss NC BBQ so much that I bought a smoker this weekend and will try my hand at BBQ while on vacation. The "BBQ" in South Texas doesn't appeal to me (although the sides and sausages are very good) so I'm just going to make it myself.

having lived in MA since 1962, i am out of touch with BBQ in the south. i was delighted to be able to make a list of good places to stop wherever i visit back home from the ones recommended. the best ever BBQ in my mind was served at brady's, then located about where Siena Hotell is now.i would not however include brady's nn the rankings that have been submitted. an Esquire Magazine article in 1959 indicated, via an asterisk by the name of Harvard College, which was ranked #1 in consumption, that UVA had been disqualified for professionalism. were brady's still there, i would have to give it the same asterisk.

Raleigh is tough. The last wood burning pit was Murray's on Old Poole Road, but it closed a year ago.
Now the closest fine barbecue with perfect barbecue atmosphere (part of the joy, for me) is Doug Saul's in Nashville - about an hour away.
Otherwise, I go to Allen & Son's in Chapel Hill, and The Barbecue Joint on Weaver Dairy in Chapel Hill.
Hersey's in Burlington is good, also.

Sure, there's BBQ, but it's not eastern NC pulled pork BBQ! After my little sister moved back to Havelock in 1996, I went down there to visit her and revisit my old stomping grounds, I found Smithfield BBQ. I loved it!!! And you can't have BBQ without having cole slaw, hush puppies on the side, and banana pudding for dessert! Um Um!!! I'm making myself homesick just thinking about it. This is a great site for a BBQ lover, even if I'm not an alumni. I grew up in Memphis and had BBQ every Saturday so I'm kind of partial to Memphis style BBQ. Everywhere I travel I always try and find great BBQ places. I have to recommend two places that I think are great.
BBQ House in Oak Island. Go over the bridge and turn right at the light, it's about 3 miles on the right. They have a great sandwich that is under 3 bucks and it has a lot of meat on it. Their beans are good too! I get out on the motorcycle with my girlfriend and ride over 100 miles to eat there on a Saturday or Sunday and it's worth it to me!
Duncan's BBQ in Chimney Rock. Duncan's is a small family owned place and you can sit outside and eat on the river or eat inside. They serve a minced BBQ. I had minced at another place before and didn't care for it but what Duncan's serves is fantastic. Their hours are limited so do a google search and check ahead of time to make sure they are going to be open. When I'm riding my motorcycle in the mountains I always make it a point to go by there at least once during my trip. I hope you enjoy these places as much as I have.

Thake a right on 29 and the first right to Central for some great oldstyle BBQ at Glenn's. The very best BBQ sauce that I have ever had came from the Blue Ridge BBQ festival last year in Tryon, NC. It is called Carolina's Best Bill's BBQ Sauce. I bought Original, Spicy and Hot. It is a ketchup based sauce, but I am told that Bill has just came out with a vinegar and mustard based. IT IS REALLY GOOD. I put it on everything. Hot dog weiners, hamburgers and FF. The Spicy is just about perfect for me. The Hot will set you on fire.

Growing up in Eastern NC (Goldsboro), I am definately biased when it comes to BBQ. Wilbur's BBQ (Hwy. 70 East, Goldsboro) is the best authentic 'eastern' style, hands down.

However, just up the road a bit, King's BBQ
(also Hwy. 70 East, Kinston) does a pretty good job... and they ship cross-country. So for all you folks out in the "hinterlands" asking for shipping suggestions, I suggest checking out their website at:

P.S. Don't forget to ask for extra sauce!!

If you can't find it, you want it that much more!

Eastern N.C. BBQ, that is. Living in Atlanta, I have to fight my way through tomato Q, and then through South Carolina with its mustard Q to finally get to ENC with its vinegar Q. There is nothing like it. For me, Parker's is the best. There are many others close behind, but Parker's does it best for me.

For those of you across the country who can not get to ENC for BBQ, you can do it at home. Grill, bake, boil or crock (yes, this is a verb now.) a Boston butt pork roast. (If you are real fired up, you CAN do a drsssed pig over hickory coals all night with your best friends.)

Baste or cook in this sauce:

2 cups white vinegar
2 sticks butter
2 tbs. salt
2 tbs. lemon juice
2 tbs. crushed red pepper
1 tbs. black pepper
1 tbs. Tabasco (or Texas Pete or other)
2 tbs. sugar

Heat mix on medium low to blend ingredients. Sauce can be applied as desired and will keep for a good while in the fridge. Reserve some for post cooking application.

I have been crocking a Boston butt this evening, and it is just about ready. Smells great, and the sauce looks great. Almost reminds me of Simp's BBQ in Mackeys Ferry between Edenton and Plymouth. If you are out that way, try it. It is very good, and I give it a 9.5 on the ENC-Q scale of 0.0 to 10.0.

Carolina Blue and Eastern Q, are wonderful treats, which are there for you. Enjoy!

Certainly worth detouring off the interstate---and you won't see any signs, either. Just head to Jackson and ask anyone where it is. I must admit that I grew up on Bullock's and thought it was really good. What I wouldn't give to sit across from my Aunt Frances just one more time and see that satisfied look on her face! Hi:

I am writing from Newport Beach, California, where it's beautiful 24/7; today it was 80 degrees. Recently, I have discovered a terrific North Carolina Bar-b-que place called "Kill Devils!" It is the real deal! The folks that own it are from North Carolina and it's obviously named after the sand dunes where the Wright Brothers first flew. Their barbeque is seasoned with a peppered vinagrette, just like Bob Melton's. My friend from High School Days in Rocky Mount, Tommy Smith, has sold Melton's and unfortunately it has closed down. Kill Devil's Barbeque here in Orange County, California is very similar to that of Melton's in Rocky Mount. Let me know whenever you can come visit!

A newer restaurant, Bart's BBQ south of Shallotte at Union School Road, is on its way to legendary status. The Bartholomew family serves a great plate of eastern style BBQ, with great slaw, Brunswick stew and hushpuppies. The chicken and banana pudding aren't bad either. Oh, you fortunate folk! You make me almost desperate for Carolina barbecue--pretty much any style. I say "almost" because I've gotten pretty good at making my own barbecue sauce and turning out some decent bbq'd pork at home--home now being in Vermont, and "barbecue" here meaning "chicken." <shudder~~> I felt an especially nostalgic twinge reading about Bridges barbecue near Shelby. Though I call Charlotte my hometown, I was born in Shelby and Bridges was an obligatory stop whenever we visited my grandparents. I've not been a resident of NC since 1978, but still make rounds of barbecue places wherever I go on trips south. Now that I know Bridges is still there, I'll make a special point of visiting on my next trip.

OK, the REAL best BarBQue joints:
1-BarBQue Center - Lexington
2-Speedy's BarBQue - Lexington
3-Tommy's BarBQue - Thomasville
4-BarBQue Shack - Thomasville
5-Murray's Bar-B-Q (Not Don Murray's) - off Old Poole Rd. in Raleigh

*Bullock's is overpriced and not very good.

and there are some great BBQ joints all over the state. In New Bern there is Moore"s, in Goldsboro there is Wilber's, in
Durham there is Bullocks, In Greensboro there is Stameys, But the Very best is from the town that I grew up in and that is Concord and It is Troutman's The BBQ meat is all about the same but the sauce is diffrent and the slaw is diffrent. I love the slaw at Troutman's in Concord, NC

I learned to barbeque pigs long before I first stepped foot on the campus of UNC almost 30 years ago. I still enjoy setting up my cooker around 5 a.m. and preparing a couple of well-chosen 110 pound pigs. The experience requires two gallons of barbeque sauce made a couple of days in advance (Eastern NC style of course from a well-guarded simple local recipe using vinegar and hot crushed pepper), some sweet slaw, hush puppies and ice tea for an all day bash out at a large converted tobacco packhouse on the old family farm.

The real treat is to show up for lunch around 1 p.m. when we turn the pigs over and eat the ribs right off the pigs while they remain on the hot cooker. For good measure, throw in a bit of your favorite music and a keg of cold beer to spike up the fun quotient. I generally slice a portion of the meat, hand mince another portion and leave the balance in the skin for the guests to eat right off the cooker so that everyone gets their particular favorite. One gallon of the sauce is used while cooking the pigs and when mincing a portion of the meat. The other gallon is put is smaller bottles and set out on the tables for the diners to use at their taste discretion when eating. Now that is the best barbeque around. Please don't call it "pulled pork" as that sounds like you are trying to make it something it was truly not "meant to be".

If you must buy your barbeque then I have a couple of recomendations. In the southeasternmost part of the Great State of North Carolina, there is Joe's Barbeque in Whiteville and Lewis' Barbeque in Clinton. The ice tea and cole slaw at Joe's are some of the best around.

The worst years of my life were '85 to '88 in Chapel Hill after Sonny's closed and my entire life in eastern NC from 1988 to 2000 when I was forced to eat vinegar-based swill. The worst offender was Ralph's BBQ in Weldon. Even the BBQ chicken was boiled in vinegar.

I was born and raised in eastern NC and lived there until I was 40. I now reside in Tampa FL and cannot find good BBQ anywhere like home. If there is one good thing about eastern NC, it's the bbq and the good ole southern cooking you can find there. Not to mention the good southern hospitality.

I would give anything to find a restaurant in the Tampa Bay area that serves bbq like home. There is nothing like a nice plate of bbq, cole slaw, and hot fresh hushpuppies.....wee doggie!!!

If anyone knows of anywhere like this..please email me and let me know. Myself and my family would be ever so greatful. Oh..and don't forget..you have to chase it with a big glass of sweet tea!!!!

While the all time greats like Bill's and Parker's in Wilson, and King's on 70 in Kinston are among the best in the East, you can't beat Smithfield's Chicken and Barbecue, an eastern NC chain, for consistently flavorful, readily available, eastern NC barbecue. They now have one on Route One North just outside the town of Wake Forest and there is another on 40 east at the Jones Sausage Rd. exit. Also one located in Morehead City for those of us who don't fancy seafood but love the coast. The Bogue House restaurant (used to be called King's) located on 24 just over the White Oak River outside of Swansboro, has excellent, chopped, wood-flavored tasting barbecue. It's a six-dollar meal in a setting that caters to the locals!

For Steve coming down to Raleigh here is my 'local' order of the universe:
1. Holden's on US 1 in Youngsville
2. Stephenson's in McGee's Crossroads (near Garner)
3. Murray's on Old Poole Road
these fellows all use wood/charcoal to cook..that is the start of 'real' for me.
4. Don Murray's on Capitol Blvd. (not wood) but a real feast of things southern..including good barbecue..but mostly a proper pig-out.
Then if you don't mind driving for 30 minutes over to Mebane..the best outside of Lexington..A&M..real wood and great folks.

As a displaced North Carolinian, you are all right. There is nothing like NC BBQ. I don't even have a favorite place back home. I just plain love a good pulled pork BBQ sam'ich with a side of hush puppies and a tall, cold glass of sweet tea. My mouth is watering right now. Lexington Barbecue and Stamey's in Greensboro are our favorites. We often stop at Lexington on our road trips to Chapel Hill for football and basketball games. Where else do you have to stand in line at 3:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon.

Living in Atlanta, we often stop in Spartenburg at Carolina Barbecue, whose original owner was from Lexington. Seems after owning an industrial business for 20+ years, he sold out that business and started Carolina Barbeque just because he had missed that great Lexington taste over the years.

I can't believe there are no mentions of the Skyview drive-in in Ayden, NC. But the 'Q is worth the visit.
Also, after living in Memphis in the early 80's there were a couple of places that were worth the drive if they are still around. One is Gridley's (several locations). Also, Bozo's in Mason, Tn., just east of Memphis. When I was there, it helped me remember eating 'Q in NC.

When I used to go there regularly with my in-laws Cecil and Lucy Pope I would eat all my stomach would hold and then have a sliced sandwich for dessert. I live in Florida and it's good here too with Sonny's serving the best pulled pork in the Jacksonville area. I haven't been able to get them to fix hushpuppies and mustard based slaw like Ralph's but I keep trying to make belibvers out of the folks who run the one in the parking lot of the Home Depot on Atlantic Boulevard. Ask for the knock-out Ms Jessica for your waitress and thats the end af a perfect day! Cheerwine has also come to Jacksonville and that adds flair to Florida Bar B Q. Hey that reminds me try General McAuthurs out in the country near Laurinburg, N. C.!

Best barbeque is Stamey's in Greensboro with Wilbur's in Goldsboro a close second. I now live in Texas and miss that NC stuff badly. What we have here is slabs of beef with tomato-y sauce, which I don't call barbeque!

In Charlotte, try the Old Hickory House on North Tryon Street near the University. How about suggestions for barbeque options in the Asheville area? I've heard about Green River, but haven't been yet. There's a fellow with a barbeque stand a few blocks south of Main Street in Black Mountain, and that's pretty good. Remember, a little touch of tomato can be a good thing.

I'm way out here in Kansas and about to drool on my keyboard as I long for Lexington-style barbecue! Kansans think a barbecue is a cookout, and any barbecued meat is usually beef.

My preferences are Speedy's and Cook's (now closed, I think) in Lexington. When we visit, my husband usually eats barbecue three days straight before considering any other food!

Oh for a small lean course chop tray w/ that wonderful slaw and hushuppies! Yum!

If y'all will allow a faculty member to post to this site: I was just down in Oxford, Mississippi, for a meeting of the Southern Foodways Alliance devoted to the subject of BBQ. There were a number of great pitmasters there from all over the South, but Ed Mitchell of Mitchell's Barbecue in Wilson just blew them away. It was up there with the best I've ever had, and I plan to make the pilgrimage to Wilson as often as I can. This is a major endorsement, coming as it does from someone who generally prefers Lexington-style.

I'm a real fan of Clyde Cooper's Barbecue in Raleigh, but my favorite place is Shaw's Barbecue in Williamston. Unfortunately, Shaw's is about 400 miles from my home, which makes it somewhat inconvenient. In the Piedmont, I like Jimmy's in Lexington, while up here in the hills, I can recommend the Barbecue Inn in Asheville and Grandma's Pancake House in Sylva.

Well, I'll speak up for Allen & Sons in Chapel Hill. They used to be a bit inconsistent, but have improved greatly since rebuilding from the fire.

On our past few visits, it's been just excellent: 'cue had authentic hickory flavor with plenty of red pepper heat, cole slaw and hushpuppies were perfect. BBQ doesn't get much better than that.

Seems like all you TarHeels out looking for good barbeque are lost. You have to step across the line into VA where on Riverside Drive in Danville, VA you will easily find the best you ever tasted at Short Sugars, along with "hot slaw" which is "to die for" and Hush puppies superb! You may take my word for it.

Reading these reviews yesterday prompted me to swing by Clyde Cooper's in downtown Raleigh on my way home from work. Very good Q. All the ones mentioned are good, with occasional off-days for one or two. The defunct Massengill's in Smithfield was excellent. Just a cinderblock hole-in-the-wall, and a mystery to me what happened to it. It seems too far west for eastern N.C. Q, but Allen & Sons in Chapel Hill serves some of the best I've had. Not exactly a Q joint, but Crooks Corner, also in CH, has THE best hush puppies. Q w/o cole slaw and puppies (or corn sticks) is oxymoronic.

I worked for Griffin's in Goldsboro as a teenager in the 1950s, which is now Wilbur's. I always thought eastern NC barbecue was the best until I tried Lexington and Bridges in Shelby. My conclusion: it's all great! My ambition in retirement is to eat my way across North Carolina and try every barbecue joint I can find. This discussion board will help me develop my road map. We have a good barbecue place here in Lynchburg, Virginia called the Silver Pig. The owner, Jim Moore, trained at Stamey's in Greensboro. It's taken a while to teach Central Virginians about the superiority of NC barbecue, but they have learned to love the Silver Pig. The Silver Pig provides comfort to us lost Tar Heels until we can get back to North Carolina.

Since I can remember, my family has driven out of the way to stop. My Dad ate there as a Robersonville native, and we still drive over from Winston-Salem, skipping the Lexington barbeque places (although Kings is alright there). B's in Greenville and Mitchell's in Wilson (yes, over Parker's and especially Bill's) also are good bets, even moreso for barbecued chicken. If you're stuck in the central or western part of the state, try Stamey's in Greensboro (the one by the coliseum). One hint for finding good cue: look for the wood piles out back!

BBQ Smokehouse - This is a place in Scottsdale, AZ with Carolina Blue running through its veins. They serve traditional Eastern NC BBQ sandwiches with slaw, sweet tea, Brunswick Stew, and hush puppies. When the word got out, people from all over the state of Arizona, came to see if it was the real deal. They left with the feeling that they had just eaten at their favorite joint in NC.
I own the joint, and am proud to say that we hosted the Carolina Alumni Assn. when they came to play Arizona State University in Oct '02. UNC was rated as the underdog in this game, but the inspiration provided our BBQ at the pre-game tailgate party got the visiting fans motivated and inspired. While it surely was not the only reason that UNC won the contest, but we were glad to do our part to make our Carolina Alumni feel at home in Arizona.

They have a pulled pork concoction that you can have in a taco or a burrito that always reminds me of the good stuff back in Eastern N.C. It's got the vinegar, and some mexican flavorings that make it a little different than 'da kine', but if you're out here you should check it out. It's very good. While you're at it, try their shots of Casadores tequila. It's like good brandy and is guaranteed to make the distance between here and your salad days in Chapel Hill seem not so far.

I have searched the world far and wide and come to the conclusion that barbeque must first have been created in the area bounded by Johnston, Pitt, Wilson, and Wayne Counties in North Carolina. I have found very little of mentionable quality anywhere else. In Atlanta we have DUSTY'S (started by a NC man),the closest thing to good BBQ outside the above mentioned area. In NC, my vote goes to PARKER'S in Wilson, followed closely by Wilbur's and Scott's in Goldsboro. I still haven't accepted the Georgia custom of serving white loaf bread with barbecue. I guess they haven't experienced Parker's cornbread sticks.

The best Barbecue I've ever eaten - and I've eaten alot - is prepared at Chap's Restaurant outside Kinston. The meat is coarsely chopped and served with a variety of southern-style vegetables, including collards, sweet potatoes, snap beans, and stewed potatoes. The barbecue is served within an hour of being cooked - no pans sitting under heat lamps here!

According to a number of patrons, the proprietor, Bruce Patterson, would cook a pig every Saturday and sell plates to members of his church and neighbors. As his reputation grew, the owner of a local restaurant complained to the health dept. A health inspector informed Patterson that he could not sell BBQ plates out of his home, but told him that the 'cue was so good that Patterson ought to open a restaurant of his own. He did, and the only disstisfied customers are those who arrive late enough that the last of the day's pig has been sold and they must settle for grilled chicken.

But the beginning of Eastern NC pork BBQ was at Scott's BBQ in Goldsboro, now located on North William St. It was started on the back porch of Adam Scott's home on Gulley St in Goldssboro in the late 1930's. Dad used to take me and my brother on Sunday noon. The best BBQ anywhere. Had only about 20 seats. Waiting in line was the normal..Scott's BBQ sauce is now sold nationwide. Before this goes any further, the west vs. east thing must be clarified:

The distinction "western" style barbecue makes no sense. Also, anyone who thinks North Carolina barbecue is EVER associated with a "tomato-based" sauce is completely ignorant of true NC barbecue. Let me explain...

First of all, tomato-based sauces, like those used by most Americans when they barbecue, are not used on true NC barbecue, regardless of east vs. west. The tomato-based style is more of a Memphis barbecue thing, or a mid-western (US mid-western) kind of thing.

Second, if there is such a thing as "western" style barbecue, it's Lexington style barbecue. Raised in Wilkes County, NC, the only barbecue we ever ate was Lexington style barbecue, which is really located in the Piedmont. Most folks I ever knew who were barbecue junkies from the western half of the state swore their allegiance to Lexington barbecue.

The difference between Lexington style and eastern style barbecue to me is that Lexington barbecue uses more vinegar and fewer pepper spices, while eastern barbecue is the opposite. Eastern barbecue tends to be relatively clean barbecue, right off the bone, with a good dash of red pepper. Vinegar is used to be sure, but only sparingly. Lexington barbecue, on the other hand, tends to be basted heavily in vinegar sauces, specially brewed for pork barbecue, although it still tends to be relatively fresh off the bone. There is also a lot less red pepper.

The difference is very subtle, and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with tomatos.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. For what it's worth, I love both styles, although my heart will always go to Lexington Barbecue on Business 85 in Lexington... hands down the best barbecue in NC!

Bob Melton's in Rocky Mount, on the banks of the Tar River, served the all-time best pulled pork barbeque--the place prospered despite many partial floodings over the years, until the Great Flood put them out of business.

When in Greenville, SC try Smokin' Stokes BBQ & Catering @ 1622 Augusta Rd. They are award winning contest cookers. They have all the sauces with bbq pork, chicken, beef and ribs. It is the best, trust me!

Lexinton style BBQ is always the best. For good Lexinton style close to the Triangle try A&M Grill in Mebane.

I have two mentioned before, and one addition to the list. The best barbecue, in descending order, is:

1) Clyde Cooper's in downtown Raleigh
2) Speedy's in Lexington
3) Parker's in Wilson

Joe's in Whiteville (with a "new" site in Shallotte) would have made my list a few years ago, but the quality seemed to slip when they went to an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Unfortunately you can't get the best N.C. barbeque anymore because Josh Turnage's in Durham has been closed for years . Family style , open fire ,spits glowing out back , the sound of rhythmic chopping of 'que in the background ,world's best hushpuppies , brunswick stew , sliced onions , ribs-ribs-ribs , hot crisp and greasy salted skins , bowls full of vinegar based delicious pork barbeque, and all the beer or coke you could drink , for $1.25 per head in 1957 !!

Without a doubt, Lexington BBQ is the best. I've lived all over the United States and nothing even comes close to pit cooked BBQ. You need to make sure that you visit the Lexington BBQ off of Hwy 85 because just because it's from Lexington doesn't make it good. The only thing that makes the Q better is an order of hushpuppies and a Cheerwine.

I'd like to put a good word in for Keaton's Bar-b-que, located off HWY64 just before you get to Cool Springs. You can get a chopped pork sandwich or a chicken half that will really make your eyes light up!

In the Washington, DC area, the best Carolina BBQ I've found is the Three Pigs in McLean, Virginia. They pull the pork, always moist, and serve a great, tradition vinegar and pepper sauce--no tomato.

BBQ It doesn't get any better. We are so fortunate to have several 1st class choices in North Carolina. In order they are:
1. Pete Jones - Ayden
2. B's BBQ - Greenville
3. Old Hickory House - Charlotte (Try the stew)
4. Lexington BBQ
5. Andy's - Welcome
Many others. Thanks for the new tips. As I travel our state I will try them all.

For quantity, Bullock's in Durham is hard to beat.
For quality, Gary's in China Grove is hands down the best.

For good NC barbeque in Florida, check out Butler's in St. Pete. They proudly display their "I live in Florida & back the Tar Heels all the way" sign and the barbeque, cooked over wood, is as good as you can get out of state.

I can't pass a BBQ joint without stopping and have eaten at every one I can find in NC and across the country. My favorite is J&G's BBQ in Burlington on Hwy 70E, right before you cross the Haw River. Tbis BBQ comes only from pork shoulders and has a brown, thin BBQ sause that is wonderful. I keep several gallons and use for Pig Pikkin's in Rocky Mount. My favorite is the sliced, which is really hunks and melts in your mouth. This BBQ comes from that at Bob's and Doyles, which was located on Highway 54 a few miles south of Graham going toward Chapel Hill.

Now you guys and gals cannot leave out Wilbur's Barbecue in Goldsboro. Located on US 70 East of Goldsboro, it is THE place to stop on the way to Atlantic Beach and Beaufort. It is quite difficult to find a parking place at lunch or dinner any day of the week, Sunday's especially...

Also, Shaw's BBQ located on Highway 64 in Williamston, NC.

1. B's Barbecue in Greenville
2. Stephenson's near McGee's Crossroads south of Garner on NC50
3. Wilbers in Goldsboro
4. Pete Jones in Ayden

In my 45 years of eating pig in eastern NC, these are my all time favorites. They all cook on wood (or at least the last time I ate at each respective establishment) the way it's supposed to be done. I plan my trips to the Greenville area to make sure I get lunch at B's. Their combo plate with a half a chicken and fresh chopped pig is nirvana for the true afficionado.

For great sliced BBQ, try Bullocks over in Durham, but go early, as they tend to sell out of the sliced quickly. And just ignore the Dook wanna-be's who may be eating there - After all, most of 'em can't tell the difference between a pig and an armadillo!

I live in New Bern, and I would like to vote for Moore's Barbecue on Highway 17 South, in New Bern. I like their hickory-smoked taste and the atmosphere.
Also, I like Gardner's in Rocky Mount; they have a terrific buffet not only with barbecue, but with a great selection of vegetables and desserts.

People in the West don't know anything about NC barbeque--the western versions simply drown beef in tomato based sauce-awful! Here in Salt Lake City, we even took a bottle of Scott's BBQ Sauce(which we bring back from every trip to NC) to a local BBQ place-they tried to duplicate it with only limited success. Vacationing on the NC coast last year, we had some very good BBQ when we stopped on the way to Ft. Fisher at A & G Barbeque in Carolina Beach. I also remember wonderful BBQ in Lexington when I was a child--a very long time ago. Glad to hear the tradition continues.

You haven't eaten BBQ until you've savored a plate from Shuffletown BBQ/Catering just outside of Charlotte, NC. The owner just happens to also own the Shuffletown Drive-in where you can get it on a day-to-day basis. They also cook for the local Volunteer Fire Department and many high school fund raisers. Come on by, but don't blink - you might miss it!

I recommend any one of four barbecue restaurants in Lexington, N.C. Try Speedy's BBQ on Winston Road, The Barbecue Center on North Main Street, Lexington Barbecue on Business Interstate 85 or Jimmy's Barbecue at the intersection of Highway 52/8 and Interstate 85.
These restaurants all serve delicious Lexington-style barbecue. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Well, when it comes to eastern barbeque joints, B's Barbeque of Greenville, NC reigns atop them all. As business is done out of a near shed on the outskirts of town, the daily crowd tunnels in for arguably the best barbeque around, although several are turned away as they tend to sell out by around 1:00 PM daily.

Without a doubt, my favorite barbeque comes from the Alston Bridges restaurant in Shelby, NC. Bridges uses a tangy tomato-based sauce that is just delicious. And the barbeque slaw is great too (for you easterners, that's cole slaw mixed with barbeque sauce).
