Comments:

King graduated from Leesburg High School in Florida in 1938. After one year at Duke University, he was enrolled at UNC from 1939 to 1941.

He entered the Army Air Corps in fall 1941. On May 27, 1942, King was the navigator aboard a four-engine bomber during a routine training flight when the plane crashed while the pilot was attempting a forced landing.

Alumni Secretary J. Maryon “Spike” Saunders ’25 wrote King’s parents:

“Your son was well known and highly regarded on this campus. Just yesterday afternoon the President of the Senior Class — the class with which your son would have graduated this June — was talking to me about Preston’s death. I showed him the clipping from the newspaper. Many boys from the University are in service. Several already have lost their lives. Our hearts and prayers are with all those boys and particularly at this time are we thinking of you and your great loss.”
