Anderson graduated from West Point in 1852 after attending UNC. He was wounded at Malvern Hill and then later, on Sept. 17, 1862, at Sharpsburg. He died 29 days later. The battle at Sharpsburg occurred during Lee’s first invasion of Maryland. Sharpsburg (Antietam) saw the single day’s heaviest casualties of the entire war.
