Avery was awarded his bachelor's degree from the University in 1839. He was wounded at the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, and died on June 18, 1864, at Orange Court House, Va. (Roster, volume IX, page 118)

"Colonel Avery walked up and down our lines encouraging our men with both actions and words" (Clark, volume II, page 570).
