Maynard entered the University from Durham High School in 1942 and entered the service after one quarter.

He was flying his 13th mission as a crew chief aboard a B-24 of the 392nd Bomb Group when the plane was lost over Germany on Sept. 11, 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
