Pethick entered UNC from Southern Pines High School and was enrolled from 1939 to 1941. He went through flight training with the U.S. Navy at Pensacola, Fla., and was a member of Bombing Squadron 14 (VB-14) aboard the carrier USS Wasp. Pethick failed to return from an attack on the Japanese fleet during the Battle of the Philippine Sea on June 20, 1944. Sources:
