The topic of the 17th Annual Timothy B. and Jane A. Burnett Seminar for Academic Achievement is “Ready for Takeoff: Preparing Teens with ADHD or LD for College” featuring Dr. Theresa Maitland, a leading expert on college students with ADHD/LD.

The Burnett Seminar targets parents of teens and young adults with ADHD/LD. Its mission is to inspire this population that success in life is possible. In this presentation, Dr. Maitland will share what parents and professionals can do to increase the odds that transitioning teens with ADHD/LD will be ready to navigate successfully in college.

Sponsored by the Learning Center in the College of Arts and Sciences and the UNC General Alumni Association.

Seminar Details

The seminar begins at 1 p.m. followed by a book signing from 4 – 5 p.m.

Studies suggest that when teens with ADHD/LD are better prepared and use services in college they graduate at the same rate as their undiagnosed peers. This workshop will share what parents and professionals can do to increase the odds that transitioning teens with ADHD/LD will be ready to navigate successfully in college. Specifically, the workshop will provide information on:

  • How differences between high school and college impact teens diagnosed with ADHD/LD
  • The common transition challenges students with ADHD/LD may experience
  • How to better prepare a teen diagnosed with ADHD/LD for the transition to college
  • Strategies for selecting a postsecondary experience matched to the readiness of a teen with ADHD/LD.
  • How to increase the odds of success for college students diagnosed with ADHD/LD
