Generation of Change: Celebrating the University’s Own Greatest Generation

Out of the ashes of a Great Depression and the powerful stimulus of a World War, a new generation of North Carolina leaders  emerged to challenge the status quo. Bill Friday, Terry Sanford, Bill Aycock and many others from North Carolina’s own “Greatest Generation” led a time of dramatic change that established many of today’s institutions. The documentary film, Generation of Change takes us from their youth in the 1920s to the climactic election of 1972, and the birth of the modern two-party state in North Carolina.

In celebration of University Day, your General Alumni Association invites you to a special viewing of  the documentary, Generation of Change, and panel discussion featuring:

  • Martin H. Brinkley ’92 (JD), Dean, UNC School of Law
  • James H. Johnson, Jr., William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship
  • Thomas W. Lambeth ’57, Senior Fellow, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and former principal assistant to Governor Terry Sanford
  • Betty Ray McCain ’52, former NC Secretary of Cultural Resources
  • Gene R. Nichol, Boyd Tinsley Distinguished Professor of Law
  • Willis P. Whichard ’62, ’65 (LLBJD), former NC Supreme Court judge, former NC State Senator, former NC Legislator

There is no cost to attend.  Pre-registration is encouraged.

Event Details

Please join us for a pre-show reception and light refreshments at 6 p.m.  The viewing will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the panel discussion at 7:30 p.m.

Paid parking is available in the Rams Head Parking Deck (330 Ridge Road) for $1.50 per hour.
