Imagine standing on Franklin Street and seeing the gas station in place of the building that now houses Top of the Hill or walking to Crook’s Corner and seeing the seafood stand from the 1940s which later gave the restaurant its name. Click in to learn how you can see Chapel Hill history through your phone’s camera.

In conjunction with the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and UNC Arts Everywhere, we have created a website which will allow you to scan one-of-a-kind logo markers placed all along Franklin and Rosemary Streets depicting small business favorites as they appeared in the past, right from your phone. You can view the website here, though the pictures can only be viewed after scanning the codes downtown on your phone.

After six months of reminiscing virtually about our favorite Chapel Hill businesses and meeting the faces behind them, we now have an in-person way for you to see what was and what is that makes our main stretch such an important part of the University’s identity, the student experience and the community’s culture. While this event will be virtual, we will be showing you how you can come back individually to Chapel Hill to see this history.

Remember long-gone favorites, learn new information about connections between the old and new, and celebrate the tenacity of our current business owners who have survived the economic hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
