Camp Blue Heaven

The GAA’s Camp Blue Heaven family camp weekend is held each year at the YMCA’s Camp Cheerio located between Elkin and Sparta in the North Carolina mountains. This year, this family fun weekend will be held Aug. 19-21, 2016.

“There are very few opportunities for families to get away together without TVs, computers and other modern day distractions; and without thinking about meals and preparing food, [to] just spend quality time with each other and [to] meet other members of the Carolina family!”  – Camp Blue Heaven participant

2016 Camp Information

We had another great year at Camp Cheerio. Thanks to the staff for showing our family campers a great time. Stay tuned for the announcement of next year’s Camp Blue Heaven dates. In the meantime, take a look at the photos from this year: 2016 Photo Gallery.

Camp Activities

The camping weekend extends from 7 p.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Sunday.

Family members of all ages can participate in all of the great traditional camp activities you’d expect such as arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, horseback ring riding, archery, riflery and tennis. Camp Cheerio also offers a great climbing wall, skeet shooting and a giant water slide. Campers have the option of participating in optional canoeing and rock climbing excursions.

Special guests such as staff from UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and UNC Men’s Lacrosse Coach Joe Breschi ’90 often provide special programming and activities.

To get an idea what the program is like, view the 2014 Camp Blue Heaven Activity Schedule.

Lodging Options

                   Millis Lodge                                                        Cabin

Cabin Option
Each family has their own cabin with a large sleeping area of twin-size bunk beds and bathroom (configured to accommodate multiple users). Cabins can facilitate families of almost any size. Families must bring their own bedding, pillows and towels.

Millis Lodge Option
Camp Cheerio also offers accommodations in Millis Lodge for families of four or fewer with hotel-style rooms, a private bathroom and towel/linen service.

Off-Camp “Day Camp” Options
Families are welcome to find off-camp accommodations and participate in all meals and activities on camp as “day-campers.” Almost every year, some families stay at the nearby High Meadows Inn.
