Born in Northampton County, the poet Horton, while still enslaved, became the first African-American to be published in the southern United States.  Later, he became a fixture here in Chapel Hill where he composed and recited poetry for Carolina students.  This session deals with the talented black bard for whom today a campus residence hall is named.

Fred Kiger portrait head shotFreddie leads our North Carolina History Series. Freddie has over 30 years of teaching experience and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor’s in history and a master of arts in teaching with an emphasis in history.

The Carolina Alumni member discount only pertains to the member. If you are a member and your spouse/guest is not a member, your spouse/guest tuition must be at the standard rate. The GAA verifies membership prior to final processing.

Refunds for lectures: 
Tuition is fully refundable for any cancellation made three weeks prior to the lecture. Any cancellation after that time is subject to a 50 percent fee. No tuition is refunded if the cancellation is made within 24 hours of the lecture.

Changing lectures: We will be happy to accommodate lecture change requests made within five business days prior to the lecture.

Please note: Lecture dates may change due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, tuition will be refunded in full.
