Award Nominations

BAR Award Nominations | Deadline: May 1, 2019

The Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Alumni Award recognizes outstanding black alumni who have been stellar leaders within the University community and/or within their local community. This award has two (2) potential categories: Young Alumni (age 40 and under) and Overall Achievement (no class or age requirement).

The James Lassiter, J. Kenneth Lee and Floyd McKissick Sr. Trailblazer Award recognizes a black alumnus who paved the way for African-Americans during the first twenty years of integration at Carolina. The recipient of this award will be an alumnus from a class between 1952 – 1972.

The Hortense K. McClinton Outstanding Faculty Staff Award honors a faculty or staff member, past or present, who has made outstanding contributions to the Carolina community.  The nominee does not have to be an alumnus.

Nomination Instructions

  • The submission deadline is May 1, 2019
  • Please only submit materials that have been requested.
  • Each section of the nomination should be submitted via the online nomination form
  • Recipients will be honored during the Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Gala on Friday, Nov. 2 and must be present to receive the award.
  • Complete nominations will include:
    • Color head shot
    • Brief biography (200 words or less; Word document only); may be used for reunion marketing (print and or web) and can be written by the nominee or another individual
    • Personal statement (500 or less; Word document only); strong personal statements should describe a defining moment in the nominee’s personal life, professional life and or describe the nominee’s most memorable Carolina moment and or describe how the nominee’s time at Carolina shaped who they are today and or describe how the nominee’s time working with Carolina students has shaped who they are today.
    • Contact information for two (2) references (phone and email)
    • Two (2) reference letters (can be from the listed references or others); strong reference letters will address an individual’s support of BAR and or leadership and or community service on the university, local, state, national or international level and or reasons the nominee should be recognized and or cite specific examples of achievements (e.g. work with African-American children, teens, college students or senior citizens, etc).
  • This process is not designed to be anonymous and one can self-nominate.
