A New Year's Resolution

From the University Report (published by the GAA 1970-94)

Are you a member of your General Alumni Association? If not, then you’ve borrowed this copy of The University Report from someone, because only dues-paying members of the GAA receive our publications — the quarterly Carolina Alumni Review magazine and this tabloid newspaper (published each January, March, May, September and November).

As you can see from the charts, your Association has enjoyed a significant growth in members in recent years. But we can’t stop now.

This month more than 90,000 alumni who are not now Carolina Alumni members were mailed a membership card and automobile decal with an invitation to join you and 41,000 alumni as
members of our Association.

Will you help us? If each of our 41,000 members convinced just one other alumnus (or Carolina friend — you don’t have to be a Carolina graduate to be a Carolina Alumni member) to join, we would double our membership and have more than half of our alumni as Carolina Alumni members. Move over Ohio State! (Actually,
Ohio State has an unfair advantage — one must be an alumni association member to buy football tickets at Ohio State.)

As an incentive, we are holding a pair of basketball tickets for anyone of Carolina’s final four home games (Feb. 15-Marquette; Feb. 18-East Tennessee State; Feb. 21-Clemson; and Feb. 26-Duke) for any alumnus who sends in 25 paid memberships. To make it easier, just find 12 non-member couples and convince them to join.

O.K. Are you willing to try to help our Association become #1 as Dean Smith’s Tar Heels compete to earn a trip to New Orleans and the Final Four and a shot at being #1 again? Write me today, and I’ll send you coded membership applications. Or, if you prefer, xerox the membership application on the back cover of this issue of the University Report and send completed applications and payments to me.

Better yet, ask every Carolina graduate you know if they received a membership application, auto decal and membership card in the mail recently. If so, encourage them to join and when they do ask them to write your name on their application form. We’ll give you credit. In order to accommodate the ticket
requests, applications must be received by Monday, February 9. (Those who exceed 25 by the highest amount will be given their game preference whenever possible.)

Let’s resolve to build our Association’s membership so we can better serve our University.

Yours at Carolina,
