Dean Smith Inducted Into FIBA Hall

Former UNC head basketball coach Dean Smith was one of three Americans to be inducted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Hall of Fame in June. Smith was one of 20 inductees from around the world.

Members are selected into the FIBA Hall of Fame on the basis of “outstanding achievement, at the international level, to the development and status of the sport of basketball.” Smith coached the 1976 U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Montreal.

In his 36 years as the coach of the Tar Heels, Smith led his team to 11 Final Fours, the 1982 and 1993 NCAA championships, 17 ACC regular season championships and 13 ACC Tournament titles. He also is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (1983) and the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame (1981).
