GAA Installs New Board Members

Tom Efird ’61 of Gastonia, president of Standard Distributors Inc., was installed as chair of the GAA Board of Directors at the Annual Alumni Luncheon on May 13, succeeding Jean Almand Kitchin ’70 of Scotland Neck.

Dwight M. Davidson III ’77 assumed office as chair-elect. Davidson, who is president of Engineered Plastics Inc., has served the board at various times since 1988 in several capacities, including first vice chair and assistant treasurer.

Efird, who earned his law degree at Carolina in 1964, previously served the board from 2001 to 2005, representing N.C. District IX. Efird is a former member of the UNC Board of Visitors, the UNC School of Law board of directors and the Educational Foundation. He has held presidencies for several groups, including the United Way of Gaston County, Gastonia Rotary Club, Gaston Country Club, N.C. Beer Wholesalers Association and the Gaston County Carolina Club.

In 2000, Belmont Abbey College honored Efird with its Grace Award, which recognizes an individual who is outstanding in business and whose contributions have significantly improved the region’s quality of life.

Kitchin announced the election of Efird, board officers and other directors, as well as the appointment of additional board members.

Other new executive officers are Eleanor Saunders Morris ’55 of Chapel Hill, first vice chair, and Randy K. Jones ’79 of Chula Vista, Calif., second vice chair. Morris retired as the director of scholarships and student aid at Carolina, and Jones is an assistant U.S. attorney.

New directors elected to three-year terms representing N.C. districts are:

  • Donald W. Curtis ’63 of Raleigh. Curtis is president of Curtis Media Group, and he has served on the UNC Board of Visitors. In 2005, the UNC Board of Trustees recognized Curtis with the William R. Davie Award.
  • Thomas E. Terrell Jr. ’79 of Greensboro. Terrell, who earned his law degree at Carolina in 1985, is a partner with Smith Moore LLP and is a former executive director of the N.C. Leadership Forum.
  • Ann Y. Young ’72 of Asheville. Young, who earned her law degree at Carolina in 1975, is general counsel for Mission Health Inc. and Mission Hospitals Inc. and a former president of the health law section of the N.C. Bar Association.

New directors elected to three-year terms representing out-of-state alumni are:

  • E. Warner Bass ’63 of Nashville, Tenn. Bass, a lawyer with Bass Berry & Sims PLC, chairs the planning commission for the City of Forest Hills.
  • Suzanne L. Weerts ’88 of Burbank, Calif. Weerts is the assistant director of the UNC-Hollywood Internship Program for UNC’s department of communication studies. For six years, she served as chair of the Los Angeles Carolina Club.
  • Thomas N. Chewning ’67 of Richmond, Va. Chewning is executive vice president and CFO of Dominion Resources Inc. He has served on the UNC Board of Visitors, the Carolina First steering committee and as chairman of the UNC Educational Foundation.

New director elected to a three-year term on UNC’s Athletic Council:

  • Eric S. Montross ’94 of Chapel Hill. Montross retired from the NBA in 2004 and is a color analyst for men’s basketball and a radio broadcaster on the Tar Heel Sports Network. He serves on the UNC Board of Visitors, the UNC Hospitals board of visitors and the executive finance committee of the UNC Medical Foundation board of directors.

Appointed as at-large directors for three-year terms are:

  • Sylvester Taylor ’79 of Greensboro. Taylor is group director of assessment and development resources for the Center for Creative Leadership.
  • W. Allen Cobb Jr. ’74 of Wrightsville Beach. Cobb is a Superior Court judge for New Hanover County who also serves on the UNC Board of Visitors.

History Professor Jacquelyn Hall was appointed faculty representative of the board. Hall is the Julia Cherry Spruill professor and the director of UNC’s Southern Oral History Program.

Reappointed to their posts were William P. Aycock II ’65 of Greensboro, counsel to the board, and N.C. Sen. Anthony Eden Rand ’61 of Fayetteville, treasurer.
