The Class of '09

These facts on the entering freshman class are estimates from the UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions, based on information as of Aug. 22:

  • 18,702 students applied; 6,726, or 35.9 percent, were accepted; 3,720, or 55.3 percent, are expected to enroll.
  • Average SAT score: 1301, the highest ever and up 14 points from last year.
  • Incoming students hail from all 100 North Carolina counties, all 50 states and 44 other countries; 82.5 percent are from North Carolina.
  • 74.3 percent of those who reported a class rank were in the top 10 percent of their graduating high school classes; 40.2 percent ranked in first 10 spots; 6.5 percent ranked first in their class.
  • 85.3 percent of those who reported a grade point average posted at least 4.0.
  • 73.2 percent are Caucasian; 11 percent African-American; 7.1 percent Asian; 4.4 percent Hispanic.
  • And for a year at Carolina, it will cost them $4,606 for in-state tuition and fees, $18,404 for out-of-state; $4,190 room with air conditioning, $3,630 without; $2,876 board; and $900 estimated books and supplies.
