Eleven Alumni Elected to UNC System Board

Eleven alumni are among the 16 people elected or re-elected to terms on the UNC System Board of Governors by the N.C. General Assembly.

Elected by the Senate to four-year terms were:

  • W. Louis Bissette Jr. ’68 (JD) of Asheville
  • Fred Eshelman ’72 of Wilmington
  • John C. Fennebresque ’70 of Charlotte (previously served a term on the board in the 1990s)
  • Ann B. Goodnight of Cary (re-elected)
  • H. Frank Grainger of Cary
  • Peter D. Hans ’91 of Raleigh (re-elected)
  • Thomas J. Harrelson ’64 of Southport, and
  • Philip D. Walker of Hickory.

Elected by the House of Representatives to four-year terms were:

  • Brent D. Barringer ’81 (’84 JD) of Cary (re-elected)
  • G. Leroy Lail ’61 of Hickory (re-elected)
  • Mary Ann Maxwell ’75 of Goldsboro
  • Ed McMahan ’66 of Charlotte
  • Hari H. Nath of Cary
  • David Murphy Powers of Winston-Salem
  • Richard “Dick” F. Taylor ’50 of Lumberton, and
  • Raiford Trask ’83 of Wilmington.

McMahan and Taylor are former members of the GAA Board of Directors. Eshelman received the GAA’s Distinguished Service Medal in 2009.

The BOG, the policy-making body responsible for the supervision, management and governance of the 17 institutions in the UNC Syste, comprises 32 voting members. The General Assembly elects 16 members every two years. In addition, there are non-voting members with varying terms including former chairs of the board, former governors and the president of the UNC Association of Student Governments (or that student’s designee).
