Honoring Stu Chapin

stu_chapinAs we celebrate the department’s 70th anniversary, we hope you will join us in commemorating the 100th birthday of one of the department’s founding members, Dr. F. Stuart Chapin Jr. With more than 30 years of service on our faculty, Stu’s teaching, research and writing helped to establish our department as one of the best planning programs in the country.

In 1957, the first edition of Stu’s Urban Land Use Planning text was published, and it quickly became the handbook for land use planners around the country and the world. Stu inspired, mentored and supported many planning students, both master’s and doctoral, during his time on the faculty. You can hear him share more about his efforts to establish the department here.

DCRP is commemorating Stu’s lifetime of remarkable achievements by raising $100,000 for our general departmental fund that can be used for graduate student top-up funding, research and travel funds and recruitment. We invite you to honor Stu’s legacy in the Department of City and Regional Planning at UNC and to the field of planning by making a gift today.

Many of you have already generously supported this initiative, and we are grateful for your support. We hope we can count on all DCRP alumni to help us reach our final goal by the reunion.

You can make your gift in multiple ways:

  • Online (please be sure to indicate that your gift is in honor of Stu Chapin under the gift options)
  • By check (mail to: UNC Arts and Sciences Foundation, Attn: Ronda Manuel, 134 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514)
