The First Lady of the Confederacy – Varina Howell Davis Her critics found her vain, proud and sarcastic. Others found her intelligent, stately, devoted and spontaneous. As wife to Confederate President Jefferson Davis and wedded to a cause that would fail, she, probably, had to possess a little of all those traits to keep her sanity. For this gathering, we visit with the First Lady of the Confederacy.
Lecturer: Fred W. Kiger ’74 (’77 MAT) leads our Civil War battlefield study programs and teaches several GAA courses each semester. He is the creator of the field guide The Civil War: A History of the War Between the States (Workman) and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor’s in history and a master of arts in teaching with an emphasis in history.
