Connecting Students With Alumni Through a Simple Hello

The SAA is proud to offer Heel-o events each semester. The premise of Heel-o is based on one idea: to connect SAA members with Carolina alumni, no matter where alumni live.

Using technology, SAA members will be invited to attend a Skype session with a UNC alumna/us. With SAA members in Chapel Hill and the Tar Heel network spread across the globe, students will have an opportunity to connect with alumni outside of the Triangle for mentorship, advice, career insights and even just to say hello.

These events are held once in the fall and spring semester each academic year. SAA members are notified of/invited to upcoming Skype sessions via email.

Attending a Skype Session

As a member of the Student Alumni Association, you have access to unique opportunities to ensure your Carolina experience is memorable. As part of the Carolina family, you now have the chance to connect with UNC alumni through Heel-o Skype with Alumni events.

The premise of the program is to bring UNC alumni and student together. Dress is casual.  Food will be provided. If you RSVP to attend an event, your host will be expecting you, and you should only cancel due to an emergency. All events and registration links are announced via SAA email updates.

Students participating can ask questions via an online form; the questions are then read aloud to the alumna/us by the event host. This is a great opportunity to connect with UNC alumni around the globe and ask questions.

Hosting a Skype Session

“I’d like to connect with current Carolina students…”

We are looking for all alumni friends who have an hour of time to devote to offering advice and insight to current UNC undergraduates. If you’re interested in participating in this program as an alumna/us, please contact Kylie Apple to view available dates.

Hesitations?

“I think I live too far away.”
This is exactly the type of UNC alumna/us we want. In an effort to connect students with the vast Tar Heel network, we encourage participation from someone who is not local to the Triangle. If you are local to Chapel Hill and interested in connecting with undergraduates, check out Dinner With 12 Tar Heels.

“I work late. What is the time difference?”
Your skype session can begin at any time, although the range of 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. EST, is preferred.

“I don’t have a lot of time.”
After selected as a Skype host, we take care of coordinating everything else with the students. Students will sign up online and will be given the date, time and location of the event. All you have to do is have a video conferencing enabled device.
