Character is destiny, and Lincoln’s complex and unique character is the subject of this lecture. Ambition, honesty, and prudence characterized Lincoln’s rise to political power. A Generosity of Spirit that was empathetic and noble, and a Generosity of Mind that was inclusive and sagacious propelled Abraham Lincoln to the pantheon of Presidential leadership. Lincoln’s moral certainty and prescient truths are woven in the fabric of the democratic creed of the American Experience, “We the People.”

This 2-hour class will examine Abraham Lincoln’s early life and the frontier forces that molded his character; his moral evolution toward human equality and opportunity; and Lincoln’s resolve as President to ensure freedom, citizenship, and political rights for every American.

Please join Joe Simpson ‘73 for an illuminating conversational lecture about Abraham Lincoln’s life and his enduring legacy. This class is designed to be an overview of our regular 8-week series, which we hope will resume in 2025.
