“Carolina Next”

Douglas S. Dibbert ’70

With wide participation and led by then-Chancellor Carol Folt, Carolina’s first strategic framework, “Blueprint for Next,” was approved by the trustees in 2017. Building on it, in 2018 Provost Bob Blouin convened administrators and faculty to develop a comprehensive strategic plan. “Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good,” approved by the trustees in January, will guide us over three to five years “to turn the University’s vision and aspirational goals into readily understood, significant, implementable, measurable, strategic initiatives and opportunities.” Intended to be assessed and refreshed semiannually, it already is being reviewed regarding opportunities and challenges in light of COVID-19.

Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz emphasized the first objective, “Build Our Community Together,” saying, “The other seven initiatives I truly believe will come together beautifully if we get this first one right.” He has committed $5 million to it, noting the importance of working “toward a campus with a common goal of creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive community … one in which every member of our campus community feels as if they belong, that they know they belong. We can’t be that leading global public research university if we’re not that type of place.”

“Carolina Next” is an exciting and inspiring plan that will be important to recruiting and retaining faculty, staff and students. This chart provides an overview; see the full plan at carolinanext.unc.edu.
