The New York Carolina Club honored two alumni — one a Tony- and Emmy-nominated writer and producer, and another who is a high school drama teacher — for their contributions to the arts.

During the club’s 25th annual Arts Brunch in May, Anthony King ’97 received the John L. Haber Award. “The Habey,” as it is known, is given to a Carolina graduate for outstanding contribution to the arts. The award is given by Carolina Alumni, the College of Arts and Sciences, Ackland Art Museum, Carolina Performing Arts, the Institute for Arts and Humanities, and the UNC departments of dramatic art, communications, and music.

King is best known for co-writing “Beetlejuice The Musical” on Broadway and “Gutenberg The Musical,” which was recently on Broadway after running Off-Broadway and Off-West End in London. King was also the co-creator and executive producer of “Robbie” on Comedy Central and has written or produced for shows on Netflix, HBO and other television outlets.

The club also recognized Hayley Adler ’13, who teaches drama at Brooklyn High School of the Arts in Brooklyn, New York. Her students were chosen to perform at the Shubert Foundation High School Theatre Festival, hosted by actress and singer Bernadette Peters, in the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. The festival chooses six outstanding high school performances of Broadway plays or musicals to make their Broadway debut. Adler’s students will perform selections from their version of “Urinetown.”
