Black Alumni Reunion Schedule | Nov. 1 – 4, 2018

The Ultimate Homecoming Experience

Whether you’re a Black Pioneer, current student, young alumnus or have been attending BAR since the 80s, the planning committee is most certain there is an event for you. For event information, click the dates below.

Thursday, Nov. 1

6 p.m.
Student Alumni Dinner and Networking Event, Sheraton Chapel Hill
Preregistration was required.

The Student Alumni Dinner and Networking Session connects alumni and current students. Prior to dinner there will be a networking session that will allow students to engage registered alumni and to hear about their Carolina and professional work experiences.

Friday, Nov. 2

8:30 a.m.
BAR Golf Tournament, Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club
Preregistration was required.

This year’s tournament will take place at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club. The tournament price includes practice balls, green and cart fees and lunch.

 3–6 p.m.
Day Party, Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery (TOPO)
Complimentary; no registration required

In collaboration with The Inside Job NC, this complimentary event is sure to get the BAR weekend off to an exciting start.

3–8 p.m.
Registration, Sheraton Chapel Hill, Main Lobby

Attendees who pre-registered can pick up their event tickets and reunion merchandise. We will need written authorization for someone other than you to pick up your packet (no exceptions). Authorization must be sent to bar@unc.edu by 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, 1 Nov. can be sent to bar@unc.edu.

5:30–6 p.m.
Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Silent Auction, Sheraton Chapel Hill

As you connect with fellow alumni and meet this year’s scholars and award recipients, peruse the various items up for bidding. Proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund.

6:30–9 p.m.
Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Gala, Sheraton Chapel Hill
Pre-registration was required

This year’s gala will highlight the many accomplishments of this year’s BAR award recipients and 2018 Light on the Hill Society Scholars. Attire: Cocktail, black-tie optional. Email bar@unc.edu for information on sponsoring a table (table seats eight, $1,000).

Vintage Times Live Comedy Show, Sheraton Chapel Hill
Ticket Price: $35 (during on-site registration or at the door)

Vintage Times Live Comedy Show will feature two hilarious comedy masters, Willie Brown and Terry Tuff,  and will be hosted by our very own Debra Terry ’86.

10 p.m.–2 a.m.
Blue Swagger Party, Hickory Tavern
Ticket Price: $35(during on-site registration or at the door)

This one’s just for us. Calling all alumni from the classes of the 90s and 00s. Blue Swagger is once again the epitome of nostalgia, taking us back to when we didn’t mind breaking a sweat on the dance floor.

Saturday, Nov. 3

9 a.m.
BAR Shuttle
Pre-registration was required. No tickets will be sold on site.

The BAR shuttle will run continuously between the Sheraton Chapel Hill and the Bell Tower.  The shuttle will run continuously between the Sheraton Chapel Hill and the Bell Tower until 60 minutes after the end of the football game.

Registration Packet Pick Up, George Watts Hill Alumni Center

Didn’t pick up your registration packet on Friday? Visit us at the Alumni Center to pick up your packet that will include event tickets and reunion merchandise.

9:15 – 11:15 a.m.
Bell Tower Climb

The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower is one of Carolina’s most beloved landmarks. Take this opportunity to climb four levels and enjoy a campus view few get to experience.

9:15 a.m.
Tailgate Party, Bell Tower
Tickets: $30 (at the Sheraton Chapel Hill on Friday, Nov. 2 and at the Alumni Center, will not be sold at the Bell Tower)

The menu will include chopped pork barbecue, fried chicken, fried fish, baked beans, greens beans, coleslaw, hush puppies and beverages. Dessert will be provided by Favor Desserts in Durham. Jr. Tar Heels are ages 5 – 12 and Toddler Tar Heels are ages 4 and under.

UNC vs. Georgia Tech, Kenan Stadium
BAR block is sold out, however additional game tickets will be available for purchase during on-site registration

The BAR football ball block will be in section 102Want to sit with specific individuals? All tickets will need to be purchased on one (1) registrant’s form (e.g. Ticketmaster, Live Nation)Game time is typically released by the ACC  7-10 business days prior to game day. Football tickets are nonrefundable.

Pregame
Class of 1993 25th Anniversary: On-field Recognition, Kenan Stadium

The UNC class of 1993 will be recognized on the field during the Homecoming football game. Please note, participants must have a game ticket for field access. Guests (who are not members of the class) and children will not be allowed on the field.

Immediately following the game
GAA Postgame Party, The Carolina Inn
No cost to attend.

Continue your victory celebration at The Carolina Inn. This two-hour celebration is the official Postgame Party featuring live music from The Castaways. Kick back or dance it out on the lawn. A cash bar will be available. Huge thanks to The Carolina Inn for sponsoring this event.

Preregistration was required.  No tickets will be sold on site.

New this year: Upgrade your GAA Postgame Party experience to the Postgame Party Lounge. This is a VIP section offering the best seats near the lawn plus a Heel of a lot more. Lounge ticket includes: two drink tickets with little to no wait at the private bar, photo booth, exclusive access to Rameses AND RJ for photos, “Cheers to You” Party Pack with a color-changing cup and straw, koozie, coaster set and a Tar Heel bottle opener, and, access to food trucks. It’s a lounge for every Tar Heel, but there will be a special emphasis on the classes of ’08, ’03, ’98, ’93 and ’88, this year’s milestone anniversaries. Huge thanks to The Carolina Inn for sponsoring this event.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled alumni party to issue a CODE BLUE Alert! This is not a test! This is not your alumni party of years’ past. The dress CODE is Carolina Blue and white – in your own, unique flair. Whether you choose dressy or comfy casual, just bring that Tar Heel swag and be ready to sweat like you did back in your college days! I repeat this is not a test! This is CODE BLUE!

End your Carolina Homecoming weekend on a high note and join us for the annual BAR Inspirational Service. Get ready for an uplifting message and singing from the UNC Gospel Choir.

Arts Brunch, Sheraton Chapel Hill
Standard Price: $35; GAA Member Price: $20

This casual brunch will include great food, performances by a student group plus the artwork from current students.

Carolina Issues Forum: Silenced Sam? and Other Diversity Issues, Sheraton Chapel Hill
Hosted by the UNC Black Pioneers |Complimentary; no registration required

Many of you have expressed an interest in discussing and debating current issues like Silent Sam, minority recruitment, faculty diversity and other matters affecting the Carolina we all know and love. At the conclusion of this year’s BAR, the Black Pioneers will host a panel discussion on these issues and more. Join us in this deep dive into all things Carolina.

  • Hampton Dellinger: Durham-based attorney and former Deputy Attorney General in the North Carolina Department of Justice; Partner with DC firm of Boies, Schiller and Flexner-representing some law students and faculty in a civil rights legal strategy regarding Silent Sam
  • Jerry Wilson: Doctoral Student-School of Education. His research focuses on civic education, politics of education, and Black teachers and their representation
  • Cecilia Moore ’13 PhD: University Historian and Project Manager – Task Force on UNC History (Silent Sam & Updated Historical Interpretation on Campus)
