What is Carolina Alumni?

The General Alumni Association of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, known as Carolina Alumni, serves Carolina and our students – past, present and future. Carolina Alumni is your connection to UNC and provides publications, programs, services, records management and legislative advocacy to support our University and to keep us connected to Chapel Hill and to each other.

Carolina Alumni is a self-governed, nonprofit membership organization that serves The University of North Carolina and its many alumni, students, parents and friends. Through our programs, Carolina Alumni promotes a spirit of fellowship and loyalty among alumni, provides a continuous flow of information on the progress and needs of the University, and encourages united alumni support for its advancement.

The University of North Carolina is the oldest public university in the United States. Carolina Alumni is one of the oldest organizations formed to link former students to their university for life.

Convened by Gov. John Motley Morehead (class of 1817) in 1843, 31 graduates gathered in Chapel Hill at Commencement and began plans for an alumni organization. Their goals still apply:

  • Perpetuate the friendships formed in collegiate years
  • Promote the welfare of the alma mater
  • Promote the cause of education

Nestled amid the trees next to Kenan Stadium, the George Watts Hill Alumni Center is the permanent home for former Carolina students. Carolina Alumni membership currently exceeds 63,000, and there are about 90 Carolina Clubs active throughout the world. #CarolinaAlumni
