Message From Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz

Dear Class of 2020,

At this time every year, I love seeing our seniors in their Carolina Blue caps and gowns taking pictures at the Old Well. Your opportunity to do that and so much more will be here before you know it. I wanted to take a moment to update you and your families on our plans for your special Commencement weekend, Oct. 9-10, when we welcome you home to this magical place—your alma mater—the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In just five months, your class will be the first—and maybe the only—to celebrate Commencement on a fall football weekend in Chapel Hill. (In case you have not heard, the Tar Heel football team is ranked pre-season top 10, and we are anticipating a very exciting season!) I hope you will join us on Saturday, Oct. 9 to cheer on the Tar Heels against the Florida State Seminoles.

The first 4,000 Class of 2020 graduates to register will be provided a complimentary ticket for the game. You are all invited to a special reunion event featuring food from your favorite Chapel Hill eateries, to be held on Saturday at the Bell Tower Quad. We will provide more information later in the summer.

OnSunday,Oct.10 at 1 p.m., we will celebrate your Commencement in Kenan Stadium. We are still working on details for this special ceremony and will keep you updated as plans are finalized.

Additional highlights for the weekend include the popular Bell Tower climb, a celebration for Carolina Firsts and the UNC General Alumni Association’s traditional champagne toast.

Registration will openonJune21, and we will update youearlynext month with more details.

Our plans are contingent on current public health guidance and COVID-19 infection rates remaining low. You can do your part to help stop the spread of the virus by getting vaccinated. This will go a long way in ensuring we all stay safe through the summer and allow us to come together for a much-anticipated Commencement weekend this fall.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz
Chancellor
