September 17, 1862 was an Indian summer day in western Maryland. By 6 p.m. that Wednesday, it was also the bloodiest day in American history and thirty-six combat units from the Old North State were there. At this gathering, we follow the stories of Tar Heels who found themselves in the horror of Miller’s Cornfield, the West Woods, the Sunken Road and ground above Burnside’s Bridge.
