Your Growing and Changing Association

Happily, your General Alumni Association is growing and changing as we continue to meet the expanding needs of our alumni and our University.

We are excited that in the past decade membership has increased from 33,000 to nearly 56,000 or by 70 percent. We are proud of our recently released membership directory and pleased that our Bicentennial issue of the Carolina Alumni Review received national recognition from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

As we begin another academic year, we are particularly delighted by our recently completed expansion of our program staff. While for some time we have had ambitious programs for students and those seeking career services, we are pleased to now have two alumni working full-time as Coordinator of Student Programs and Coordinator of Alumni Career Services. They join our Director of Activities, Director of Enrichment, Coordinators of Clubs, Program Assistant and Administrative Assistant in rounding out a very talented, hard-working, program staff devoted to meeting the expanding program needs of our alumni family.

As we enthusiastically anticipate the future, we also note with considerable sadness the retirement of our long-serving, outstanding alumni editor, Westy Fenhagen ’46. After a distinguished foreign service career, Westy returned to Chapel Hill and soon thereafter joined our staff. In the past eight years he has provided thoughtful, conscientious leadership to improve our publications. His devotion to Carolina, his strong work ethic, his commitment to the General Alumni Association’s broad service mission, his genuine interest in students, faculty, alumni, University staff and GAA staff colleagues contribute to make him a very special colleague and friend. We were privileged to work with him these many years and know that he and his charming wife, Betsy, will welcome a more relaxed pace while continuing to enjoy the Southern Part of Heaven.

Finally, in this election year we hope our North Carolina alumni will encourage candidates for the N.C. General Assembly to express their thoughts on higher education. You might ask candidates what they believe should be the priorities of Carolina’s next chancellor. Please remember that in your community, as in your profession, to many you are The University of North Carolina.

Yours at Carolina,
