James W. Dean Jr., who recently left the provost’s office, has been named the next president of the University of New Hampshire.

Dean recently stepped down after four years as executive vice chancellor and provost — the University’s top academic officer. Robert Blouin, former dean of UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy, assumed the post last fall.

Dean will become New Hampshire’s 20th president June 30. John Small, chair of the University System of New Hampshire board of trustees, said UNH is gaining an “experienced leader from one of the nation’s top public universities.”

Dean worked for 15 years on the faculty and administration of UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, including five years as dean (2008-13). He also was senior associate dean (2007-08), associate dean of executive development (2002-07) and associate dean of the MBA program (1998-2002).
