As we have often been reminded, the world of prisoners and POW camps give rise to great personal and public reaction.  In this, the latter stage of the American Civil War, prison populations and war frustration exploded giving rise to circumstances that made this nation’s civil war all the more uncivil.  In this session we’ll investigate the camps, the conditions and the unfortunate victims that left this aspect of the Civil War without a victor.

Lecturer: Fred W. Kiger ’74 (’77 MAT) leads our Civil War battlefield study programs and teaches several GAA courses each semester. He is the creator of the field guide The Civil War: A History of the War Between the States (Workman) and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor’s in history and a master of arts in teaching with an emphasis in history.

Read Kiger’s recommended reading list.
