By December of 1864, Major-General William T. Sherman and his army were more than halfway to Savannah from Atlanta.  His March to the Sea was one of several campaigns that made him one of the great generals of the American Civil War.  However, in much of the American South, he is vilified.  During this session, we’ll analyze the life and career of a man who not only burned his way across Georgia and South Carolina, but into the collective consciousness of countless Southern generations.

Lecturer: Fred W. Kiger ’74 (’77 MAT) leads our Civil War battlefield study programs and teaches several GAA courses each semester. He is the creator of the field guide The Civil War: A History of the War Between the States(Workman) and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor’s in history and a master of arts in teaching with an emphasis in history.

Read Kiger’s recommended reading list.
