Though the Tar Heel State re-entered the Union June 25, 1868, the issues of Reconstruction and civil rights were still politically contested.  At this gathering, we tell the story of “redemption” in the Old North State and document its consequences for the old ruling elite, poor whites and freedmen.

Lecturer: Fred W. Kiger ’74 (’77 MAT) leads our NC History field-study programs and teaches several GAA courses each semester. He is the creator of the field guide The Civil War: A History of the War Between the States (Workman) and has two degrees from UNC, a bachelor’s in history and a master of arts in teaching with an emphasis in history.
